There's none of that characteristic paper mill odour, but, every day, 500 tons of newsprint roll out of a big white complex on Thickson Rd., just south of the 401 in Whitby.

Given cautious consumer sentiment, the big gift will probably give way this season to more sensible items. Fortunately, the simple offering, like the small thoughtful gesture, often has more meaning than an oversized, overpriced present.
Many eco-friendly gifts, of which there are many options, are attractively priced. Urban Barn has a set of six colourful coasters made out of recycled tin cans for $16. The stainless steel Otter Bottle, featured here earlier this year, has a limited-edition holiday design of red anemones, a portion of the sales of which goes to the Kidney Foundation of Canada. (Year-round, a portion of sales goes to the David Suzuki Foundation.) Prices start at about $16.
